Do you have a book brewing in you? Or do you just want to write more of your thoughts and stories?
When people hear I’ve been honored to write and publish 8 books (and there’s really more, but 8 have my name on them as author), they ask: how do I find the time to write? Yes, I do have a full-time job and a rather full life, but I also love creating content and sharing with others. I’ve had to learn a few tricks to make my deadlines and keep the words flowing. I share some of those tips below and in the video. Please comment about any tricks you have to get your writing done. Sharing is caring.
- I write any and everywhere. Thank God for laptops. I’ve written while waiting on my daughter at swimming lessons; at airports when traveling alone–because you’re kind of stuck there until the plane takes off…and if there’s a delay, you’re all good (and bonus points if you get a good seat with some arm room! You can write on the flight or just jot down notes in your phone app); quickly before work–I can do a lot in a focused half hour. The real trick is committing to sitting down and getting those thoughts out. I can always go back and edit my work later. Letting the words flow takes practice, but it is a wonderful feeling once they do.
- I take assignments. Much of my writing has been through assignments. If a publisher needs a ghost writer, someone to compile pieces for a book, a curriculum writer, etc, I am not opposed to accepting an assignment. It may not be exactly what I want to write (but it usually is in my wheelhouse/interest area) and sitting down to complete an assignment prepares me to write my own material. It lets me know I can do it, and the assignment comes with much needed perimeters–a deadline date.
- Talk to other writers; hear what they do and how they got started. A great way to do this is through writers’ conferences. There are many–in person and virtually. Here are two I have agreed to speak at this year (one is virtually and one is in Wheaton, IL). Do your research and find one that fits your schedule, location, and budget. https://writetopublish.com/ https://publishingincolor.com/conferences/
